Jean Rusen Joining Us On sPACYcLOUD Day!

We're so happy to have Jean Rusen joining us on September 7 at Finding A Line festival at Kennedy Center hosted by sPACYcLOUD and Skate Girls Tribe!

Jean Rusen moved from Ocean City, MD to Tempe, AZ at the age of 25. After spending over 6 years at the beach, falling in love with surfing, that transition to the Arizona desert could have been painful. Thankfully, she quickly discovered a new love; SKATEBOARDING! That love affair was the beginning of a wild and wonderful ride.

Jean acquired her first sponsor at age 35, made the podium and won $$ at a pro event for the first time at age 44. She was the first woman to ride in a World Cup Men’s event in September 2009 (Tim Brauch Memorial Bowl Comp, Grand-Masters’ Division). She has been listed in the WCS Men’s Masters rankings 4 years, with her best finish being 24th out of 79 riders.

Jean is currently the oldest active rider in the WCS Women’s Pro Division and has taken on a new role within the world of competitive skateboarding by serving as a judge at a few events. She has been a fixture on the judging panel of the annual, all-female Exposure event for the past three years.

In addition to skateboarding, Jean stays busy with her job at New School for the Arts & Academics (Tempe, AZ) and her gig as lead vocalist in Kevin Daly’s Chicken and Waffles, a Phoenix-based rockabilly/garage band. She is also kept on the run by her supportive husband of 18 years, Steven Keyser and her brilliant, beautiful “Spawn”, Jada (17) and Sadie (14). Mama, the Awesome Spawn & their rad pup, Matilda have spent several summers visiting family, friends and killer skate parks all across the USA; passing though as many as 21 states and skating 40 different spots in just one summer!

Jean is really stoked to be part of this amazing event, especially since it means a trip back to the "right coast". She is forever grateful to all of her sponsors for keeping her rolling all these years; Original Betty Board Co. (who released her "Masters Model" deck back in February), Decent Hardware, Recycled Skateboards International, Hoss Rogers Jewelry & Sidewalk Surfer.

SPACYcLOUd is Finding a Line!

SPACYcLOUd is excited to be part of the Finding A Line: Skateboarding, Music, and Media festival at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts!

Giving a fresh opening to a brand new season, the Kennedy Center presents Finding a Line: Skateboarding, Music, and Media, a multi-disciplinary festival that celebrates a vibrant and influential American subculture by highlighting local artists, as well as the creative ties and improvisational elements shared between skateboarding and live music. The initiative distinctively intersects art, skateboarding, community, and play in an open call for cross-genre, artistic activism and civic participation. The festival also engages collaborations with the George Mason University School of Art and the D.C.-based nonprofit Cuba Skate, both of which will actively involve students, artists, musicians, skaters, constituents, and community members in designing, building, and interacting with the newly designed skateboarding and performance space over the weeklong festivities.

Skateboarding at the 2020 Olympics?

It's a controversial subject but signs are pointing to skateboarding in the 2020 Olympic Games, in Tokyo, Japan. Skateboarding as an Olympic sport is a natural progression and it's something that should be celebrated in and out of the skating community.

The Olympics have been considering skateboarding for some time, especially in light of a 2014 Huffington Post article that stated that the average Olympic viewer was only getting older. "The median age of the Olympic viewer increased from 50.9 in 2006 to 55.1 this year, despite the addition of snowboard and halfpipe events designed to appeal to young people,” explains author David Bauder. At IASC’s recent 2015 summit, Research Director Thomas Barker pointed out that 70% of all skateboarders were below the age of 25.

The announcement, if it comes to pass, shoud be announced soon and leaves little time to organize an International Federation to oversee the event. There are at least three competing organizations, each vying for the official designation of “International Federation.”: The World Skateboarding Federation (WSF), the Federation International de Roller Sports (FIRS), and the International Skateboarding Federation (ISF).

No matter what, it's an exciting development! What do you think about skakeboarding at the Olympics?

The sPACYcLOUd LookBook!

A lookbook is a collection of photographs compiled to show off a model, a photographer, a style, or stylist or a clothing line. Usually, bloggers or vloggers will "model" fashionable looks for that month or season. This gives viewers ideas on how to style outfits, or to show what the latest fashions are.

At sPACYcLOUd, our LookBook is a small sample of our style and reflects our motto: Ride. Play. Live. Create.

We embrace the positive energy of individuals who do their own thing in hopes of inspiring the world around them to do the same. The common denominators in anything that we dp are peace, love, justice, and creativity. Our belief is everyone has the right to express themselves, free from fear for doing so, no matter if you’re a controversial artist, a cutting edge skateboarder, an up and coming indie musician, or a trend setting fashionista.

Enjoy our LookBook and check back to see the latest styles from sPACYcLOUd!

Meet Cheburashka & Gena the Crocodile!

The Cheburashka and Gena the Crocodile t-shirt has arrived in DC! While they look great on a tee, many don't know about these beloved Russian characters. Cheburashka is from a 1966 story by Soviet writer Eduard Uspensky. He is also the protagonist (voiced by Klara Rumyanova) of the stop-motion animated films by Roman Kachanov (Soyuzmultfilm studio), the first film of which was made in 1969. Cheburashka became a popular character in Russian jokes, along with his friend, Gena the Crocodile. According to Uspensky, Cheburashka is a monkey-like creature who lives in a tropical forest. He accidentally gets into a crate of oranges, eats his fill, and falls asleep. The crate is eventually delivered to a grocery store in an unnamed Russian city (hinted to be Moscow), where the rest of the main story unfolds.
The puzzled store manager finds the creature in the crate when he opens it, and takes him out and sits him on the table. The creature's paws are numb after staying in the crate for so long, and he tumbles down from the table, onto the chair, and then onto the floor. This inspires the store manager to name the little creature "Cheburashka". Words with this root were archaic in Russian; Uspensky gave them a new lease on life.

Now you know the story when people ask you when they see you rockin' the shirt!

Don't forget about our sPACYcLOUd
USSR tee as well!
